Obituary

Vernon Verdee Edwards II entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 9, 2026, joining his Lord and Savior. He was born on July 5, 1960, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Vernon V. Edwards, Sr. and the late Doris Edwards.

Affectionately known as “Little Vernon,” he was the beloved middle child and only son. A devoted son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend, Vernon was also known to many as “Hagen Riker Savage,” a name that reflected his bold spirit, adventurous nature, and unforgettable presence.

Vernon accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

He attended Eastern Hills High School, graduating in 1978, where he distinguished himself as a disciplined and dynamic athlete. Vernon excelled in football, track and field—including pole vault—and gymnastics. Known for his fearless athleticism, he captivated audiences with daring feats, often flying over chairs, cars, and even people. His commitment to excellence and strong sense of discipline developed during these years would remain a defining characteristic throughout his life.

Following high school, Vernon attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he continued to pursue his passion for gymnastics.

After college, Vernon returned to Fort Worth and began teaching gymnastics at Surles Gymnastics Studio. There, he shared not only technique, but also strategy, creativity, and discipline with his students, leaving a lasting impression on the young athletes he mentored.

He later went on to work in seismograph operations at GSI alongside his Uncle Ray, a role that took him across the United States. Vernon embraced the opportunity to travel, meet new people, and learn about different cultures, forming connections wherever he went.

Vernon eventually found his way to Bandera, Texas, where he brought his talents and personality to life at the Flying L Dude Ranch. There, he embodied the spirit of a true cowboy—performing in Western shows, engaging guests with staged gunfights and rope tricks, leading horseback riding tours, and teaching others how to ride. His natural charisma, athleticism, and love for storytelling made him a memorable presence to all who experienced his performances.

He later returned to Fort Worth, where he continued his career in underground cabling and construction work, a role that also included travel. No matter the role, Vernon carried the same discipline he developed through athletics—approaching every task with focus, pride, and a desire to do it well.

Beyond his work, Vernon lived life with authenticity and heart. He was a proud Dallas Cowboys fan and had a deep appreciation for music—especially country and soul, drawn to songs that told meaningful stories. He took pride in his signature mustache and fully embraced the identity of a true cowboy. An untrained yet gifted cook, Vernon had a talent for preparing meals that brought people together.

Vernon was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He gave freely of his time, resources, and energy, never hesitating to lend a hand. He was a thoughtful listener, even when he did not agree, and once he committed to an idea, he expressed his thoughts with passion and conviction.

Family meant everything to Vernon. He loved deeply and treated friends as family—extending that same love and connection to their families as well. His presence brought strength, laughter, and a sense of belonging to those around him.

Vernon is preceded in death by his mother Doris Edwards, aunts Luci Lee Hall Pollard, Bobbie Jean Hall Cunningham and Abbie Dee Hall Patterson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his father, Vernon V. Edwards, Sr.; his loving sisters, Debra L. Board (Michael) and Cynthia Y. Edwards (Gregory Singleton); his nieces, Amber Board, Megan Board, and Dakota Banti (Buntu); his great-niece, Milani Banti, and great-nephew, Sisa Banti; his uncles, Alfred A. Hall (Annie) and Willie Ray Hall; aunt Jo Ann Hall; uncles and aunts Donald Haynes, Wanda Haynes-Gindratt, Edwards Hall, Sr. (Bridgette), Rozena Hall Del Mar (Sandford), Althea Hall Stewart (Larry) and a host of cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

Vernon’s life was defined by discipline, generosity, adventure, and love. He lived boldly, gave freely, and left a lasting imprint on all who knew him. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
